The material transformations that govern polymer processing – degradation, phase separation, reaction conversion – occur inside the melt, on timescales that offline characterisation cannot resolve. Xplore and ColVisTec AG are closing that gap.

Their collaboration integrates ColVisTec's inline spectroscopy systems (NIR, UV-Vis, or Raman depending on application) directly into Xplore's micro-compounding hardware, paired with simultaneous rheological monitoring. Spectroscopy tracks process and chemical state: additive distribution, moisture, chain scission, conversion. Rheology captures mechanical response: viscosity, elastic behaviour, network formation. Together, they provide a dataset neither method can generate alone.
The platform is suited to a wide range of applications – reactive extrusion, polymer blends, biopolymers, nanocomposites, and functional systems – with low material consumption and short cycle times enabling rapid formulation screening. The combined inline analytics generate structure–process–property datasets that directly support industrial scale-up.
ColVisTec AG, Berlin, develops inline spectroscopy systems for industrial process analytics. Its portfolio covers UV/Vis, NIR, and Raman instruments, plus GelDetect for unmelted polymer particle detection in polymer melts.
