Engagement to reduce Global

Food Waste and Loss

According to the Food and

Agriculture Organization of the

United Nations (FAO), today

there are 870 million people

who are hungry – although

enough food for human

consumption would be

available. One of the reasons:

One third of all food produced

in the world is wasted or lost.

In numbers: 1.3 billion tons of

food. If only one fourth of the

lost and wasted food was saved

and transported to those in

need, nobody would have to

stay hungry.

F

ood is lost and wasted throughout the

food value chain, from initial agricul-

tural production down to final house-

hold consumption. According to the

Food and Agriculture Organization of

the United Nations, 40% of food loss

happens at post-harvest and processing

levels in developing countries. Food los-

ses and waste are mainly caused due to

financial, managerial and technical limi-

tations in harvesting techniques, storage

and cooling facilities in difficult climatic

conditions, infrastructure, packaging

and marketing systems.

40 % of food losses occur at retail and

consumer levels in industrialized countries

and are mostly considered as food waste.

Here, farmer-buyer sales agreements con-

tribute to quantities of farm crops being

wasted. Another cause for food wastage

is quality standards, rejecting food items

that are not perfect in shape or appear-

ance. On the consumer level a high per-

centage of food is thrown away.

Klöckner Pentaplast is committed to re-

ducing food waste and loss. “Our inno-

vative packaging solutions effectively

protect food during the entire distribu-

tion chain; minimize loss and waste of

both food and packaging during trans-

portation”, explains Giles Peacock, Head

of Food and Consumer Packaging divi-

preservation and shelf-life extension on

ment is continuously ongoing on our so-

phisticated technologies and formulas,

as well as our sustainable production

methods," continued Peacock.

To actively fight global food waste and

loss, Klöckner Pentaplast has also joined

sion, at Klöckner Pentaplast. Klöckner

Pentaplast’s innovative packaging solu-

tions help to reduce food loss and waste

along the food distribution chain. For

instance, rigid films with excellent barrier

and sealing properties such as Penta-

food

®

multi-layer film or the new

APET++ film help to protect food con-

tent from moisture and oxygen through

the whole distribution chain. Further, ri-

gid films that enable higher temperature

treatments such as Pentafood

®

heat re-

sistant films offer longer shelf-life

through pasteurization and sterilization.

In the dairy market, in which approxi-

mately 20% of food loss and waste oc-

cur according to the FAO, the new solu-

tion clikPET helps to avoid damages and

breakage during distribution due to the

non-breakable, leak-resistant and tough,

tear-resistant packaging material and va-

cuum. Furthermore, due to the PET-

based technology, clikPET enables a lon-

ger shelf-life of food content – giving

more time flexibility on the distribution

and retail level and offering freshness
