High Performance Polymers (HPPs) SBU of Daicel Corporation (formerly Polyplastics) has registered its leading plastic gear grades of DURACON® POM with KISSsoft, a gear design and service life prediction software compliant with the German VDI guideline.

In gear design, it is essential to predict gear service life with high accuracy beginning with the design stage and select the optimal material. Evaluation and design based on the German VDI guideline is widely used and KISSsoft is utilized in many design environments, including by Tier manufacturers and OEMs not only in Europe but throughout the world.

Daicel has registered:
DURACON® POM M90-44, a standard grade
DURACON® POM M25-44, a standard/high-viscosity grade
DURACON® POM CP15X, an improved creep resistance/high-viscosity grade
DURACON® POM HP90X, a high-rigidity grade
DURACON® POM WW-09, a high-sliding/high-viscosity grade
DURACON® POM NW-02, a high-sliding grade, will be registered in October.

Designers using KISSsoft can perform the design and service life prediction of plastic gears made from DURACON® POM directly within the software, thus streamlining material selection and improving design evaluation. Load conditions can be taken into account when performing gear life prediction analyses in KISSsoft, enabling material comparison and selection during the early design stages.

For gear calculations based on VDI guidelines in KISSsoft, the supplier must provide not only general physical property data, but also tooth root temperature-dependent gear fatigue data. Since the physical properties of plastic gears change significantly due to rising temperatures, it is important to consider the influence of root temperature when evaluating gears under actual operating conditions. Therefore, Daicel established a system to monitor root temperature via thermal imaging, and control root temperature during the fatigue testing process.

DURACON® is a registered trademark of Daicel Corporation in Japan and other countries.
