Brabender presented optimized AbsorptoMeter

Brabender presented optimized AbsorptoMeter

News 29.12.2023

The new AbsorptoMeter torque rheometer from Brabender with its elegant design is suitable for the precise characterization of materials in battery, car tire and cosmetic powder production. It offers reproducible and globally standardized measurement results in accordance with the ASTM standard as well as fully integrated titration during the measurement process.

The new AbsorptoMeter efficiently determines materials for manufacturing processes

Batteries are more important today than ever before: electrical energy storage devices convert chemical energy into electrical energy, which can then be used to power electrical devices. In battery research and battery production, it is significant to determine the raw materials used in order to determine the quality of a battery. This data can be decisive in the selection and optimization of materials for battery production.

With the new AbsorptoMeter, Brabender has now launched a new torque rheometer on the market that can characterize raw materials for battery production. “In battery research, the AbsorptoMeter provides information on how efficiently the raw materials can absorb liquids or electrolytes. This information can be used to make statements about battery performance, service life and stability”, says Viktor Schäfer, Business Development Manager Software Solutions at Brabender. The device therefore measures the ability of a material to absorb or absorb liquids: “This information is important for understanding the behavior of materials in different environments, which can be important for battery production”, Schäfer summarizes.

AbsorptoMeter: Wide range of possible applications
The AbsorptoMeter is a further development of its predecessor, the Absorptometer C, and determines the amount of oil required to completely wet a free-flowing, powdery sample material. This quantity is specified as the oil number (OAN / COAN) in millilitres per 100 grams in accordance with standards for the characterization of fillers. In addition to raw materials for battery production, the AbsorptoMeter is also suitable for determining the oil absorption of materials such as industrial carbon blacks and recovered carbon blacks, silica, pigments and fillers. It is therefore mainly used in incoming goods and quality control to check the composition and properties of materials that are essential for manufacturing processes. For example, it can also be used for material characterization in car tire production or in cosmetics in the field of cosmetic powders and pigments.

The new measuring device not only delivers reproducible results using the oil absorption method, but also globally standardized measurement results in accordance with ASTM standards. It also has a new and space-saving stainless steel design that makes cleaning easier: “With its special seals, the AbsorptoMeter is ideally equipped for dusty and dirty working environments”, emphasizes Schäfer.

Automatic titration thanks to precision dosing pump
The AbsorptoMeter is based on torque measurement with a flexibly interchangeable measuring mixer, high-precision burette with variably programmable titration rate, large display for an overview of the process parameters and Windows software. The device’s software solution is easy to operate and supports automatic data export to ERP and LIMS systems for greater flexibility.

The AbsorptoMeter measures and records the torque during the entire mixing process. Using the automatic precision dosing pump, the test fluid is continuously added to the powder in the Measuring Mixer and supports viscosities of up to 1,000,000 mPas. Finally, the liquid is absorbed by the structure of the sample material. Depending on the desired application, Brabender has various accessories in its portfolio: “Different mixer geometries are available for different applications, which can be easily mounted on the drive unit”, says Viktor Schäfer.

Info Box:
Standard methods
The AbsorptoMeter characterizes materials according to the following standards:
Carbon blacks (carbon blacks and recovered carbon blacks), according to ASTM D 2414 (OAN) or ASTM 3493 (COAN)
Silica (ASTM D 6854) – withdrawn since 2018
Pigments and fillers (as an alternative, automated method to ISO 787-5:1980)
