More and more consumers and manufacturers are prioritising sustainable products in order to contribute to efforts against climate change. Public and political discussions on how to obtain raw materials as carefully as possible and environmentally friendly “after-use handling” have driven the plastics industry, in particular, to push forward with sustainable innovations. Statutory regulations and outlooks on the EU Directive for the prevention of microplastics have contributed to the increasing development of alternatives to new goods and recycled plastic solutions among manufacturers, brand manufacturers and suppliers. Bio-based and bio-degradable polymers are moving further into focus as this happens.

Lifocolor Bio-C Masterbatches for Home-Compostable Biopolymers

With the expansion of its bioportfolio, masterbatch manufacturer LIFOCOLOR hits another milestone on its way to becoming a market leader for sustainable colouring solutions in the polymer-processing industry. The Lifocolor Group has expanded its LIFOCOLOR BIO range for colouring bio-based, home-compostable polymers to include what it calls “Bio-C” (compostable) masterbatches. They colour bio-based, biodegradable polymer products in such a way that the end product can be certified for compostability under home composting conditions. “Combined with suitable biopolymers, our Lifocolor Bio-C Masterbatches can decompose under home composting conditions. They decompose during the decomposition process to water, carbon dioxide and minerals. All the colourants used are therefore selected so that they do not pollute the environment during degradation”, explains Dr. Martin Fabian, Managing Director of the Lifocolor corporate group.

Sustainability meets trendy colours: Lifocolor Bio Colour Road 2022

The Lifocolor group goes a step further with its interpretation of the trending plastic colours for 2022. “For the first time, we created our yearly trending colour series Colour Road in accordance with our new Lifocolor Bio-C Masterbatch standard. In doing so, we show that biodegradable biopolymers can absolutely be coloured to fit the latest trends and doesn’t have to look boring; Actually, it's quite the opposite. Sustainability and trendy colours go very well together. This puts us on pace with the times in two respects”.

The colourists at Lifocolor have succeeded in meeting the demanding requirements of biodegradability along with designing a variety of brilliant colours. The eleven masterbatch formulas of Colour Road 2022 colour biopolymer products that can be composted as home and pave the way for the end product to be successfully certified for home composting.

Colour Road is developed every year in close cooperation with RENOLIT SE. Their trend experts consult with international colour designers and institutes to put together a trend report for LIFOCOLOR. In a joint creation process, the upcoming season’s trendsetting colour codes are interpreted for the plastics industry. The motto of Colour Road 2022, “In touch with colours”, was chosen to match the idea of sustainable colouring for biopolymers. The eleven trending colours were inspired by the balance between nature and society. The colour world for 2022 deals with the three trending topics: “Elements” with calming blue, green and yellow tones; “Fundamental” with base tones in grey, white and sand colours; and “Statement” in shades of rose, brown and red.
